first trip...gambling tips

Hi guys...

So as the title says its mine and my partners first trip to vegas in december..

We%26#39;ve only ever been to one casino so i can%26#39;t say we%26#39;re gambling experts but i understand the basics of the games...

I was just wondering as %26#39;newbies%26#39; to vegas has anyone got any tips for us when it comes to casinos and gambling over there...from how do you get free drinks to free rooms....??

thanks in advance

Free drinks are easy. The cocktail waitresses walk through the casinos saying ';Cocktails!'; or ';Drinks!'; or some variation there of. Just place your order when they get to you and then tip when you get the drink. We usually tip $2 per drink and tend to get very good service. It can take them a little while to get back to you though, as they usually cover a large area.

Sign up for a player%26#39;s club card at every casino you visit (though there are several ';families'; of casinos - the MGM/Mirage properties, the HET properties, etc. that you only need one card for). Use your card every time you gamble. It tracks your wagers and this is how people get offers for free or discounted rooms, invites to slot tournaments, show tickets, etc.

Also, most casinos offer gaming lessons in the mornings. You can ask at the players club desk or the casino cage for a schedule. It can take away a lot of the anxiety of playing something for the first time. Classes are done on the casino floor and last 15-30 minutes and go over the basics of betting and playing certain games.

Hope that helps some!

Free drinks are served when you are gambling, and the drink waitresses should be tipped each drink, at least a $1, maybe more on the first drink to encourage the waitress to check back.....

Otherwise, self control is very important. decide what is the max your willing to loose each day and quit if you loose it.

Never stick with the same slot machine, they can go into lenghty dry spells. be random, try a lot of different machines and in a lot of different casinos.

Table Games, the rules vary from table to table and what casino you are in. Understand the rules so you can pick the right place or table to play. aka 3/2 blackjack versus harrahs 6/5 ripoff.

thanks so far guys...thats great information...

i was always wondering about how people get free rooms and other things...is it free to sign up then? We%26#39;re staying at the luxor...

We are really good with our money to be honest... - and i%26#39;ve read about the right pocket left pocket thingy ;) on the FAQ%26#39;s....take out of your right pocket and anything you win put in your left - once the right ones empty walk away... :) we did this in the casino we went to here in britain to be honest but when we went there we were just was getting used to the games didn%26#39;t really take notice of the rest of it...

probably only be playing slot machines, blackjack and roulette - is there a casino we shouldn%26#39;t bother wasting our time on with more poker table for example than the above or do they all have about the same amount/type games?

Might sound odd but i also read that if you arrive in a limo or some other flash car the casino people treat you %26#39;differently%26#39;...in what way...do you get some freebies/vip treatment? I%26#39;m not a scrounger or anything but was thinking of getting a limo to a show but after i read that i thought about having a gamble or two in the casino before we go in....not everyday you get treat like a pop star ;)...

Sign up for a players card.

Divide your gambling budget into the number of days you will be in Vegas and stick to that amount each day. We put our daily gambling allotment in envelopes, label them and put them in the safe. This insures we have money for each day. I can%26#39;t imagine being in Vegas and not having gambling money.

Some agree, some disagree--do the most of your gambling at the hotel you stay at. When you check out see what kind of comps they will offer you based on your play. Of course if you feel unlucky at that hotel, go elsewhere. Never play for comps. Consider them a bonus.

Stick with your budget and you will have a much better time. Thankfully I have a husband who makes sure I stick to my budget or I could blow it all in one day. Don%26#39;t be tempted to chase losses.

Have a wonderful time in Vegas. It is most addictive for me. My favorite vacation spot.

Yes, it is free to sign up for a player%26#39;s card at any casino. Don%26#39;t expect to be getting any freebies this trip, but you will probably end up getting offers with discounts on your next visit.

As far as rolling up in a limo and expecting to get special treatment - you%26#39;ve seen too many Hollywood movies. Anybody can rent a limo, but the people who get special treatment in Vegas are gambling more in one visit than you or I would probably earn in a decade. That having been said, the general level of service at hotels, restaurants, etc. in Vegas is much higher than what you%26#39;re used to in the UK and on the Continent. So you may find yourself feeling like the ';posh set'; without having to do anything out of the ordinary, except tip well.

Regarding casinos - Every casino will have the games you%26#39;re looking to play. My only advice would be to avoid blackjack tables that pay 6:5 on a blackjack rather than the standard 3:2. These should be clearly marked.

thanks again....i did have to re-read that with regards to the limo but it defo says it on something on here...i thought its ok getting a limo there and getting say 1 free drink but as soon as they see you only putting $5 in a slot machine they%26#39;d be outta there :-)....

Again, you will get free drinks at almost any casino as long as you are gambling. If you would get a kick out of arriving in a limo, do so by all means, but nobody at a casino will be impressed.

I agree with stratton about the limo - any average joe can rent one for $50/hour or whatever their rate is.

Maybe if you drive-up in a Rolls Royce Phantom (something the avg joe cannot afford) or something like that, you might get noticed, but I have no idea if what you drive-up in matters.

have fun!

Watch the roulette on the digital tv channels dave or nuts on late night tv to get an idea of how its played.

Then play at El Cortez or Slots of fun where the stakes are lower, and enjoy the comp drinks.

El Cortez downtown with its 25 cent chips and $2 minimums is a great place to learn to play roulette and ejoy a few coranas.

Might as well join the players club wen your there and get a comped meal too.

Yes, you do get free drinks while you%26#39;re playing slots but some casinos have better service than others. I find the cocktail service to be slow at MGM, don%26#39;t know about others on the south end but Bill%26#39;s Gambling Hall mid strip has good cocktail service. Sometimes it%26#39;s a hit or miss type thing. Downtown casinos have good drink service as well as lower limit tables and roulette. If you have the time, take a half day and spend it downtown on Fremont St.
