Road trip from Las Vegas to Florida

In the absence of a coast-to-coast forum, I thought I%26#39;d post this here since Las Vegas is where I plan to start the road trip.

I%26#39;m toying with the idea of doing a road trip in the 3rd week of December, starting from Las Vegas going to the Grand Canyon, through Tucson, and finally ending in Miami (obviously with other stops along the way). I have 2 weeks for the trip. A few questions:

1. Would it be crazy to do this since I%26#39;m travelling alone?

2. Would it be much more costly than just flying from Tucson to Florida?

3. Since I plan to take the southern route, how much of a factor would winter be?

If there are other factors you think I ought to consider, I%26#39;d appreciate you raising them.

Many thanks in advance!

I wish I had the knowledge to advise you!

Sounds like a great plan, and a fabulous adventure. I wouldn%26#39;t let travelling alone be an issue.

Have a great trip x

Road trip from Las Vegas to Florida

We did a road trip earlier this year and found the road trip america website forum really helpful.

We drove from LV to our place in Broward County this past summer. Took only 4 days since our purpose was to get home, not a road trip for sightseeing, and that was a fairly slow pace.

I love your idea - as far as cost I can%26#39;t help, you%26#39;d have to compare all costs, although I wouldn%26#39;t let the monetary costs be the final factor.

Weather should not be an issue - of course weather is fickle, this time of year on most of your route not a big deal. Do check for the GC area.

2 weeks would be a great trip - pick stops that interest you, spend a night or two, have fun. We particularly like finding locals diners, BBQ joints, etc.

Alone is fine - as ong as you know how far you can drive in one session - which won%26#39;t have to be very long since you%26#39;re taking your time.

Yes, I%26#39;ve actually browsed the roadtrip website. Just trying to gather as much info as I can. I%26#39;ve also been told by a friend -- who has never done it -- that only Texas might be a problem because of the weather. And I thought, what%26#39;s with Texas? First, there%26#39;s the David Koresh sect. Then, there%26#39;s the polygamous sect. And, of course, who could forget? It%26#39;s Texas that gave the world George W. Bush!

Thanks for your advice and best wishes, Zafiragirl and sandstring!

Unfortunately, the monetary consideration has to weigh in considerably, especially given the global economy. I consider myself fortunate just to be taking the trip. My original plan was to fly from Tucson to Miami. But seeing that most flights --if not all -- make stops somewhere (mostly Atlanta, I think), it crossed my mind to just drive coast-to-coast.

But I%26#39;d still consider your suggestions.

Thanks, bridgefan 1!

Born in CT, early childhood in TX, private HS and college in the Northeast.

If costs is a big factor flying may be considerably cheaper, given the costs of a one-way tix (or make your total tix an ';open jaw'; to maybe save more $. Compare hotel rooms, gas, meals, etc - for 2 weeks v 4 hours in the air.

Great idea.........

1. No – Personally I would prefer this sort of trip as a solo venture, do what and when you want.

2. I assume you would be hiring a car for the drive, is so you would need to check on the one-way drop charges that would be imposed, flying might be a cheaper option.

3. The locals would be able to inform you more on this, but I would imagine as long as you don’t travel on the higher roads all would be fine.

Have Fun

There is absolutely nothing wrong with Texas!!!

I-10 is a highway that runs from Florida to California, and would most likely be the one that you would be traveling through Texas on coming from Vegas. If so, it runs through the lower/middle part of Texas, where weather shouldn%26#39;t be an problem. The cooler weather here, where there is ice and snow, is pretty much up north and well above I-10. If you come this way you may also want to stop into San Antonio for a night. It%26#39;s about halfway through Texas (its about 800 miles from border to border) and has a lot of history, and a nice town to spend a night in, if so, check out the Riverwalk... Houston is between San Antonio and Louisiana on I-10 as well if you wanted to stop in there. Also, if you get a chance a few more hours into Louisiana on 10, is Lake Charles, take a quick break there and stop at one of the Isle of Capri casino for some quick gambling! Have a great time! I can%26#39;t wait to read your TR!!

Google a site called gas buddy and it will allow you to check fuel prices in variuos areas.

Texas is not a concern other than it is a HUGE state that will take a long time to drive thru. If you follow I-10 all the way weather is not going to be a problem. No fear of what Texas has given us. I have driven thru Arkansas and they gave us the Clintons. Nobody will ask for you voting prefernce before they help you.

I would be more concerned about the weather at the Grand Canyon then in Texas. Also 2 weeks could be a push for a solo trip if that is 2 weeks from the day you fly to Vegas. Depending on how long you want in GC and Tucson.

1. No.

2. Yes (!)

3. None.

Air ticket: $ 300

Versus:

3 weeks of a rental car: $600 +

Gas: $400 +

Food: $300 +

Hotels: $ 800

Roadtrip experience: priceless.
