We are thinking about rafting down the colorado but I%26#39;m wondering if July is just going to be too hot. Has anyone done it in the summer ?

Are you thinking of a full canyon trip or a 1/2 day float?
We did our full canyon trip in August 2 years ago, and although the temps were as high as 100, the breezes and shadows in the canyon made it relatively comfortable.
If you%26#39;re thinking about a 1/2 day float from the reservation, it will be hotter due to a few different factors. First, the canyon walls are much wider and not as high, so you won%26#39;t have any shadows to cool you. Second, you%26#39;ll be at a much lower elevation (the river drops almost 2800 feet from Lees Ferry), so the weather will be naturally warmer and less breezy. But the good news is that the 1/2 day trips are only a few hours long and so you%26#39;ll recover when you get back to your air conditioned room in LV that night. But expect it to be really hot in the old school bus that they use to get you back up from the river.
The half day trip in Glen Canyon is at a higher elevation, and Glen Canyon does provide some shadows. But I doubt that you%26#39;re considering that trip if you%26#39;re posting in the LV forum.
And you live in Tucson, so you know what hot temps in the summer all about.

The bottom of the canyon temperatures are just like Tucson, so you already have a good idea of the heat factor. The good thing is you are by the river on a river trip. Now lets see- hummm-jump in, jump out- viola instant air conditioning. Also, one tends to acclimate after 4 or 5 days, if you live in Tucson and are outdoors much there before your trip you have a good head start. That being said, cooler temperatures in the shoulder seasons will great help your enjoyment of the multitude of awesome hikes in the canyon, not to mention making a hike in or out much more comfortable and safe. That is if you do a partial trip. I have done many trips on the river and even in the heat of summer, everyone has a great time.
