I%26#39;ve heard that the best way to really see the Grand Canyon is to raft through it, any thoughts? Where do I even begin to look for tours? Will I be able to book once I%26#39;m in Vegas?
Also what do you wear for this, I leave in 3 days... it WILL be hot, and the water I hear is freezing!
Thanks for your help!
I want to go rafting down the Colarado River!

I want to go rafting down the Colarado River!
Rafting through the Grand canyon is probably the very best way to experience the Grand canyon. But it%26#39;s over 200 miles and takes a minimum of 7 days, and in most cases requires almost a year in advance planning and reservations.
Rafting on the Colorado River,as you mention in your thread title, is a different thing all together. There are a variety of rafting options on the CO but all of the day trips will be outside of the Grand canyon itself with just a few exceptions. Western River as linked above offers some trips in the extreme western end of the GC where most of the real GC raft trips end. They will float you down a the river for a day or so and you can experience the river and a small portion of the GC. Other trips will be even further downstream, or way up stream above the GC in Glen canyon near Page.
Yes, the river will be very cold. Expect water temperature to be around 40 degrees. The Colorado River is not known for swimming. It%26#39;s called the Colorado because of its red color, which is a result of the dirt and silt and mud that runs in it.
If you want to get a taste of the river and the GC, try to book something with Western River, but at this late date, I%26#39;d be surprised if you can still find something so soon.
Better yet, do some research and plan to come back again next year and do a real GC River trip. It will take a week or longer and cost about $2K, but it%26#39;s something you will never forget.
And if seeing or experiencing the Grand canyon is on your list of things to do, then go to the Grand Canyon Nat%26#39;l Park forums - Arizona and research there. You need to plan an overnight trip to the park to see the real Grand canyon from the South or North Rims. Again, this is something that you can%26#39;t generally do without advance planning and reservations.
What you can book from las Vegas are quickie day trips to the so called west rim of the GC. This is an area in the extreme western end of the GC on the indian reservation land, that will give you just a tiny taste of the GC. It%26#39;s about 150 miles away from the park. They will also offer you a quickie float trip so you can say you were on the CO river, but it%26#39;s hardly a raft trip that qualifies as a GC raft adventure. Expect it to be expensive and IMO a waste of your money. The scenery is dramatic, but it is NOT the Grand Canyon.
Finally, there are a few day trip options from LV that will drive you by bus, or fly you to the GCNP atthe South Rim, where you can see and experience the real Grand Canyon for a few hours, but you will not be able to access the river on these trips. You%26#39;ll realize why when you get there, but the fact is that it%26#39;s too far away and inaccessible expect by hiking of by mule, and all of this takes planning and reservations, and way more time that you have. Check Scenic Airlines for information about day trips to the GCNP, South Rim.
Check out Laughlin NV. River rides, wave runner etc.
Rafting through the Grand Canyon is THE TRIP OF A LIFETIME! If you can do the longest trip possible, DO IT. I have done many trips on the river, and even in the heat of summer, everyone has a great time. Check out this site for helping you find information on finding the right trip for you ehow.com/how_4511365_book-grand-canyon-raft-… All the companies are great and everyone always feels that they have been on the best trip no matter what company they go with. Also, www.rivers-oceans.com can help you find a trip. The owners and some of the employees are guides in the canyon and guide for many of the outfitters. They work with all the outfitters in the Grand Canyon and will have the best odds of finding you a trip even at the last minute. Many outfitters are almost full already for 2009, so don’t wait around. The odds of booking a last minute trip from Vegas are virtually impossible, unless you do the one-day whitewater trip in the far Western section, which should be your last choice.
I plan on doing this and going to go with www.grandcanyontours.com Looks good. I am pretty sure I wont be dissapointed. I have not seen other companies that do this ride. I have not booked it yet but plan to when I get there. it%26#39;s 118 bux and they pick you up at your hotel. It%26#39;s a float, not rapids, just a chill ride. do it
