Hi everyone
The posts here were really useful to help me decide on a white water rafting trip. But I still have questions and I hope you all can help me out.
I%26#39;ve deceided on a 6-8 day rafting trip through the lower canyon. Are there any outfitters than have trips that include:-
1. A nights stay at Phantom Ranch after the hike into the canyon?
2. A mix of oar and motorized (40hp) boats?
Also 3. I%26#39;m thinking of going mid/late May. Is this a good time to raft? Would the water in the river be cold?
Thanks!
Sam
Grand Canyon RaftingSamRam, I went well over 30 years ago and unless they%26#39;ved outlawed motors on the river, they should have both oars and outboards. Our rafts were quite large with everyone sitting on the outside and all of the gear stowed in the middle.
The only other thing I%26#39;m quite certain is that the water will be cold. Sun hot. I went in April and it was in the mid 80%26#39;s on the river and snowing on the rim. May will most likely be warmer. Are you walking down to the river or utilizing a pack animal? Riding a Mule. Enjoy

Grand Canyon RaftingPost your thread on the the Arizona forum, as there are several experts there who will have a great deal of information for you.
The rafting on the river through the GC is very tightly controlled and limited nowadays, and there is a chance you *may* not be able to get on a trip this year.
I believe the rafting trips are not combined with hiking down to Phantom Ranch.
Again, post on the AZ forum :-)
Hi, SamRam, There is one company that includes a night at Phantom Ranch and mule duffel service down or out of the canyon. However, you can only go on their motor rafts. There is no company that offers that type trip on oar rafts. May is a great time of year to go, as it is a little cooler than summer, but it can be windy. I recomend the oar raft over the motor unless you just dont have the time. it is a more intimate experience. The longer the trip the better whether you go by motor or oar! The water is always COLD, even in mid summer as it comes out from deep in Lake Powell. All trips fill up pretty early in the canyon due to limited space, so you had better start soon to find a trip. check out ehow.com/how_4511365_book-grand-canyon-raft-… for more information on how to go about finding your raft trip.
