We have booked to go to Las vegas in April. Last year the exchange rate was $2.03 to the gb pound. now its around $1.43. Does anyone know whether is due to drop further or increase. We had a great time last year and got some really good bargains at the outlet centres. We take about £1000 each, now instead of $2000 we will be getting $1400 thats such a big difference.
our flights are exchangable so do you think we should postpone the trip or go somewhere else?
Dollar droppingWe are all in the same boat Carlie.
I suggets you go see a romany gypsy who can foresee the future if you want to know if the exchange rate will worsen or not....
Dollar droppingPeople from the UK have been getting wonderful bargains in the US, everyone should have realized it would not last forever. No one here can tell you what to do or what the £-$ ratio is going to do in the next few months, we can%26#39;t even tell you what it will be a week from now. It%26#39;s just like gambling, you don%26#39;t ever know if you are going to win or lose. It was not realisitc to think the good times were going to go on indefinitely.
i know nobody can predict the future. i just thought someone may have heard something on the news etc. The reason we were going to vegas is that it was so cheap for everything. now thats not the case, which is sad cause i love it there.
It%26#39;s Sterling that%26#39;s ';dropping'; and the dollar that%26#39;s going stronger.
The $2 pound was always a somewhat false position that (whilst being great for visitors) was a total disaster for UK exporters. Your loss is the battered UK economy%26#39;s gain.
As for knowing which way the forex markets are heading, if we knew that we could all quit our jobs tomorrow and make fortunes. Impossible to say, especially in the current climate. The US remains a better deal for UK visitors than countries using the Euro however.
Thanks for that blagger, what we may consider is changing the hotel for a cheaper one, at least that will save some money. We are staying in the mgm for 8 nights but could drop this to 4 and stay in luxor for the rest. or do 8 nights in luxor. at leaast then we would have more money for shopping!!!!
Consumer goods are still cheaper in the US than in London.
yeah i know they are cheaper still, but not as cheap! i brought a whole suitcase worth of clothes and trainers back with me last time!!
Carlie -
I am in the finacial services game and although you will have differing opinions, do not buy US$ yet - hold off. This is a freak time and with the amount you are talking about, just relax and dont postpone your trip.
These flucuate all the time - in the late 1980,s the dollar and the pound were almost equoal.
In summmary - let the arsehole bankers worry about it and enjoy your holiday.
I believe this is a short-term fluctuation, and that the reason for the recent drop in the UK pound is that the British economy is in worse shape than the US economy at this point.
Once this economic crisis passes, I have read that the foreign exchange rates will again be based on the fundamentals, and the fundamentals are not good for the US dollar, due to the enormous debt taken on by the US government to bail out everyone presently and over the next year, plus the existing 10 trillion dollar debt.
Once China and our oil-rich friends in the middle east run out of money to lend to the US, that will cause a currency shortfall in the US that can be solved only by the federal reserve printing more money, which in turn will drive the US dollar down.
So, if you can wait until the economic crisis passes, then you%26#39;ll be in good shape.
Of course, take this advice with a grain of salt, as I am not a Harvard MBA, but I did stay at the Holiday Express last night.
I can%26#39;t believe that fellow Brits are making such a big deal about the exchange rate. The US is a great place to visit I%26#39;ve been doing it since 1992 and never once thought about the exchange rate. Just go enjoy yourself and as my dear old Mum used to say ';cut your coat according to your cloth';.
