Campin and Rafting on the Grand Canyon on our own

We are trying to plan a Grand Canyon rafting trip of about one week in length.

Can we do this ourselves by camping along the river and then possibly just rent a boat that will drop us off and pick us up down the river in a couple of days?

Any suggestion will be helpful.
